Title: Infection Prevention & Control for Clinical Engineers: It's Safer than you may think

Description: Clinical engineers (CE) are critical members of the patient care team. As such they provide essential support for a wide range of patient care equipment and without their expertise the delivery of care would be severely compromised. This support means that engineers handle a lot of equipment and may encounter potential exposure to microbes that are present in or on patients. What is the risk of this type of work? Are there prevention strategies that are important for the clinical engineer as they accomplish their tasks? These questions will be explored in this session.

A related issue is the role of the CE alerting their direct care colleagues and infection preventionists (IPs) of problem they observe related to cleaning, disinfection and, if applicable, sterilization of devices. Quite often the disinfectants that IPs recommend may not be compatible with devices. The CE can serve as a key subject matter expert in this regards as well as an important liaison with device manufacturers. Please join us to explore the microbial world in this session.

Presenter: Russ Olmsted - Director, Infection Prevention & Control Services, Saint Joseph Mercy Health System, Ann Arbor, MI

Outline:

1) Types of microorganisms and level of contamination encountered in the clinical care arena
