SPECIAL MEETING
MONDAY, JUNE 29, 2009

Dear Members of Michigan Society for Clinical Engineers (MSCE) and Michigan Society of Healthcare Risk Management (MSHRM):

You are cordially invited to attend a special meeting with Medical Product Safety Network (MedSun) staff from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Social & Scientific Systems, Inc. (FDA’s contractor for this work) and a panel of MedSun Representatives who will present information on their patient safety efforts related to product safety, reporting innovations, and relations with vendor representatives to foster patient safety.  This meeting will take place in the Stanley Steamer room at the Hyatt Regency Dearborn (Michigan) on

June 29, 2009 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. (with dinner served from 5:00-6:00 p.m.).  Please

e-mail your RSVP to Jahan Azizi Azizi with Risk Management, University of Michigan Health System at azizi@med.umich.edu by May 15, 2009.

The MedSun  program was launched in 2002 by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH).  It has grown to include the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER) as well.  The primary goals for MedSun are to identify, understand, and share information about problems with the use of medical devices as well as human cells, tissues and related products.

MedSun plays a very important role in FDA's post-market surveillance effort.  The program provides those participating in the Network, training for and access to, a secure Internet-based data entry system that automates the process for fulfilling healthcare facility reporting that is required under the Safe Medical Devices Act (for devices) and the Joint Commission standard on reporting concerning human cells, tissues and cellular/tissue products (known as HCT/Ps).  MedSun helps gather other additional data to help device manufacturers, clinical facilities and the FDA proactively address safety concerns—in many cases before serious injuries or deaths have occurred.

There is an orientation for new MedSun representatives (from newly recruited and existing sites) on June 29 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. (on the same day as our meeting, in the Desoto room at the Hyatt Regency Dearborn).   For more information about how to have your hospital join the MedSun Network, please contact Carol Simmons of the MedSun Project staff at csimmons@s-3.com as soon as possible.
